While players have for a long time been able to charge for access to private Minecraft servers they control However, the company's guidelines on usage insist that "all players must be able to access the same functionality" in those servers. Mojang is also concerned about "instances in which NFTs were sold at artificial or fraudulently exaggerated prices" and also situations where NFT assets "may need an asset manager who might disappear without notice." Mojang warns that these issues could result in "some third-party NFTs not being trustworthy" and could result in a loss for those who buy NFTs.
Mojang has kept a small time frame for future NFT applications, which could "allow for more secure gaming and other practical and inclusive applications within gaming." The company says it does not have plans to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft.
A rug pull outside?
Mojang's announcement will have a significant impact on projects such as NFT Worlds. NFT Worlds sells NFTs linked with world seeds, which are used to create specific Minecraft maps. OpenSea data shows that NFT Worlds has traded over 500.000 Ethereum (or $76 million at current exchange rates) with individual world tokens selling in the average for 2.5 ETH (about 3,700 in the present).
