Neve Paritzki (נווה פריצקי)Jerusalem is home to Israel's first bicycle tunnel

The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding which is enjoyed by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest bicycle tunnel, has been inaugurated as part of a 42-kilometer cycle route that runs through the capital.

The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.


Inauguration of the tunnel that is 2.1 kilometers long was held in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion and Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) and hundreds more cyclists.

Elkin his ministry, which responsible for the project, along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism as well as in creating new attractions and ventures that connect the stunning historical past with the exciting future of Jerusalem. I invite cyclists to enjoy an attractive, well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the distinctive scenery of Old Jerusalem.

About NIS 25 million were earmarked in the project. It was budgeted by Elkin's ministry The Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality, the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to transform the concept of transport throughout Jerusalem." Elkin stated that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike routes. It will also be made paved in the various areas. The tunnel will be a great way to encourage cycling and promote green transportation in the capital.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure Tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water that runs to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Road construction and installation, as well as blowers, modern safety systems and electrical wiring are all part and parcel of the present works. The tunnel is safe for the public to use throughout the season.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to special recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo as well the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
