The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.


It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban while the northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile from the Kerem junction.

נווה פריצקי Inauguration of the tunnel that is 2.1 kilometers long, was held in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) and hundreds more cyclists.

"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist city due to its rich past. In the present, in addition to its rich history, it also incorporates modern-day tourism." Elkin said. "The opening (of this tunnel project) is a further step in the expansion of Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable city to visit for all kinds of people throughout Israel and around the world."

Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the improvement of all aspects of Jerusalem's tourism and the development of exciting tourist attractions and ventures that link the rich history of our capital city's eternal past to the future of Jerusalem... I invite cycling enthusiasts to visit and enjoy the modern and well-maintained cycle route that offers a view of the unique landscape of Old Jerusalem."

The project was financed by Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the vision to change the way we think about transport throughout Jerusalem." "The new tunnel connecting to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join the existing bike paths as well as the ones that will be paved within the neighborhoods. It is intended to encourage biking among its residents and promote the green revolution in transport in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line towards the Sorek purification plant.

Road construction, installation , and testing of safety and electrical systems are just a few of the ongoing projects to make the tunnel safer for all seasons.

The Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreational areas, such as Ein Kerem, a neighborhood which includes a Biblical aquarium and zoo, and also the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
