Q2:
In source A, Ugwu is new to the city and has positive expectations
when coming from a village. Ugwu sees the city as organised.
This is clear when we learn that he describes the 'bungalows...sat side by side like polite well-dressed men'.
The use of the simile effectively highlights Ugwu's impression that the
city is a place of importance and professionalism and how Ugwu is excited to be moving to somewhere he can grow as a person from the city, and doing something professional. Furthermore, his observation and positivity suggests he's ambitious to fit into the city. The adjective 'well-dressed' has connotations of neatness which is again implying that he already has a mindset for what the city is like which perhaps leads him to exaggerate how the city is actually like. As a result it's clear that Ugwu is naïve of his new surroundings, but is courageous or adventurous of
them.

Q3:
In source a the writer creates interest, through creating a melancholy atmosphere, the reader can feel sympathy for Ugwu as he's getting a job, but is reminiscing his home in his mothers hut when he starts touching things.
This can be seen in lines 25-27 where the writer shifts in time to illustrate how Ugwu's auntie got the job for him as a houseboy. By the writer using a shift in time, they give the idea that Ugwu's auntie is opportunistic.
It also gives a sense of desperation from Ugwu's auntie to get her son a job in the city. As a result, an impression is created that Ugwu's auntie seeks to validate Ugwu and maybe perhaps convince him to move on with thinking about the village and his home. Furthermore, the mood created by Ugwu who 'would feel from the mud walls of his mother's hut' clearly indicates how he must've enjoyed his life even if he wasn't in the city he so loved and wanted to be in.
Therefore, the sympathy builds throughout the extract; as a reader you are interested because you would want to know more about Ugwu back home or why he decided to move in the first place.

Q4:
I strongly agree with the statement. Ugwu's feelings change gradually, it's like he regrets his thoughts on wanting a job, therefore he eventually describes everything as very different right after reminiscing his old home. This is clear on lines 39-42 where the writer uses a described semantic field of feeling perhaps trapped or overwhelmed which indicated that Ugwu may have a hard time feeling comfortable with a new place especially somewhere very different and advanced (as it's the city) compared to a small village with a small community. He is getting the taste of the 'real world' out there. At this point Ugwu may be feeling homesick as he still makes a reference to his home back in the village with his current surroundings. However, the fact that Ugwu is moving from the village makes us question why he should be homesick at all. Furthermore, he is perhaps moving too fast for himself in life and wasn't as prepared as he thought he was. The juxtaposition of 'wide' and 'cramped' comes through further as a symbol of how Ugwu feels about where he is, he feels that room may be too much for someone who came from not having a lot and feels cramped in the way that there is too much for him to take in, settle down and eventually get used to it. As a result, it's clear Ugwu not only regrets going along with getting the job around the city, but more over feels its too much in the sense that he
almost doesn't feel like he belongs there.
