Millions of devices are susceptible to attacks due to a vulnerability called Log4Shell in the open-source log library Log4j. The Verge points out that apps and services keep the track of every event while they run, giving them the ability to analyze how their program is performing and to discover the reason for the error in the event of errors. Log4j happens to be a popular and widely used logging library and even popular cloud services such as Steam and iCloud, as well as apps like Amazon, Twitter and Minecraft are said to be susceptible to attacks that exploit Log4Shell.
According to Ars Technica, it first was discovered when Minecraft websites began reporting on vulnerabilities that allow hackers to execute malicious code inside the game. It was soon apparent however, that the problem doesn't affect Minecraft only. Security researcher Marcus Hutchins, who helped stop the spread of the WannaCry malware, described the vulnerability "extremely grave" since millions of applications use Log4j for logging.
Bad actors could use it to remotely execute code on servers, directing them to download and execute malware that could compromise businesses' and people's data. It's easy to exploit and could be activated by posting messages. Hutchins said that in the case of Minecraft, attackers were capable of executing code remotely through the posting of a message in the chatbox. In an article on its blog the app security firm LunaSec said triggering the vulnerability in Apple's servers is as simple as changing the name of an iPhone.
Log4j has already issued an update for the vulnerability and affected services such as Minecraft and Cloudflare have already issued patches to protect users. minecraft servers Log4j users who run their own networks may need to patch their systems as soon as possible , if they are able.
