The Kerem Tunnel is the first bicycle tunnel in Israel and was opened as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.


The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza path. The southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The opening ceremony of the tunnel which measures 2.1 kilometers long took place in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) as well as a plethora of cyclists.

Elkin explained that the modern tourism industry is one of Jerusalem's historic treasures and incorporates modern day tourism. Elkin, whose ministry was spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested thousands of shekels annually in the development of Jerusalem's tourism and in the development of new attractions and ventures that connect the stunning historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. The project was funded by the Elkin's Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an crucial tool to realize the idea to change the way of thinking and transportation throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel will be connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will connect with the various bicycle paths that are already within the city. These will be paved within the various areas. The aim is to promote cycling among residents of the city.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line towards the Sorek purification plant.

Construction of roads, installation, blowers, modern security systems and electrical wiring are all part of the ongoing work. The tunnel will be safe for the people to use all year.
