How to Get Minecraft Capes

Prior to this, they were only available to Minecon attendees, you can now get your very own Minecraft capes. Learn how to get them in both Minecraft Java and Bedrock

How can you get hold of Minecraft capes, you think? There are rumors of a fabled piece of cloth that is worn on the shoulders of the most prestigious Minecraft players. Legends talk of numerous Minecraft capes handed out to the fortunate few over the years. Word on the block (sigh) is that capes alter the appearance of Minecraft Elytra, the magical wings found in the end of ships, as they share the same area on a player's back. It's no surprise that Minecraft capes are extremely sought-after however, they're not easy to obtain.



Anyone who attended a Minecon event before Minecon Earth 2017 each received Minecraft capes. Each year, they received a new colour and design. More rare are the personal caps that were given to lucky people in recognition of their accomplishments, like Reddit user u/billyk_ who received a personalized turtle cape after he suggested that Mojang should include turtles in Minecraft.



Unless you can come up with a suggestion as good as turtles (unlikely) or can time travel back to Minecons past It appears that you're out of luck to get any of these Minecraft capes in the Java version. They're more common in the Bedrock version, as some skin packs on the Marketplace have them. If you want them for free, you can try on a cape using the assistance of Minecraft mods, but it'll only be visible to you. There's currently a Minecraft cape for the Java edition, however it's not available yet, so keep reading to find out how to obtain it.



Get a Minecraft cape by transferring your account to Minecraft.



In a blog post published in 2020, Mojang announced that it is migrating all Minecraft Java edition accounts from Mojang to Microsoft. This is a mandatory change, so if you don't switch your account over at the time it is due and you don't get it, you'll be in a position to play Minecraft unless you use the launcher.



On the bright side, when you log in to Minecraft using your Microsoft account, you'll gain access to a brand new cape and maybe more as Mojang hints at players receiving 'more than one outfit to showcase'. New Minecraft accounts are automatically registered using Microsoft instead of Mojang.

How to activate Minecraft capes



If you have an official Minecraft cape, you are able to equip them before launching a game. However, your capes Bedrock capes are only available to that version. The same is true for any capes that you can earn in Minecraft Java version.



For the Bedrock version open the app and click the button to enter the Dressing Room from the main menu. Then, click on the tab on the left with a red cape and the Mojang logo. This will show all your capes that are available So, pick one and click on equip.



To play the Java version, you need to launch the Launcher and then click Minecraft: Java Edition on the left-hand side of the screen. The menu will show a few options at the top including Skins. Click this link to open all your skins currently available. You can modify the existing skin or create a new one from this page. You can view all of your officially-available capes by clicking the option to choose Skin File.



Find a cape by using Minecraft mods



What happens if your avatar needs an outfit and you don't want to shell out for the cape that is free to migrate? You can create your own cape with mods. Mods such as the Advanced Capes Mod make it possible to obtain the most sought-after capes in the game, or any cape that you can think of.



There's a caveat to this: other players you meet on multiplayer Minecraft servers aren't able to see your cape unless they have the same mods installed.
