The enthusiasm and interest in computing education for children continues to increase. Meanwhile, Minecraft has become a hugely popular cultural phenomenon as an exciting, stimulating platform that encourages exploration and play. This talk will demonstrate how Python can be used to teach programming while playing in the world of Minecraft. We will explore ways to create learning environments, curricula and case studies. The interest and enthusiasm for computing education for children is increasing across all levels from government-sponsored initiatives to our own Python community. It has been difficult to find appropriate resources and environments that can be educational and motivating for the younger generation of coders. In the meantime, Minecraft has become a massive cultural phenomenon, capturing the imaginations and hearts of our young people. Millions of hours have been spent on Minecraft making and creating worlds and drawing the attention of its users. It's a motivating and fun platform that encourages exploration as well as playing. This presentation will focus on the importance of playing in education, the fundamental principles of motivation and how it applies to teaching programming. What is the best way to help Minecraft and its virtual environment solve these issues? We will look at the different tools and methods that can be used to facilitate Python-based interactions with the Minecraft world. The available Python APIs for Minecraft will be covered together with examples of curriculum and projects. The tools and the environments discussed will be able to meet the requirements of Minecraft on both PC and iMac versions. Minecraft and Minecraft PI We will discuss how to set up appropriate learning environments for your own use. Minecraft Online Learn about the successes and failures of other communities. Outcome: Parents and educators will leave with an understanding of Minecraft, its capabilities, and its importance in education. They will also learn how to teach Python programming through games within the Minecraft world. Participants will be provided with resources that can teach Python, as well as the steps required to create learning environments.
