YouTuber Dream has broken records and gotten millions of views. But the man behind the avatar is still a mystery. - With 16.4 million users on YouTube, Dream is one of the fastest-growing YouTube channels on the platform. Even though he's been the subject of controversy but the Minecraft expert has one of the most loyal and dedicated fanbases online. Visit Insider's homepage to read more stories.
Minecraft YouTuber Dream has quickly risen up the ranks of creators and is now one of the fastest-growing YouTube channel's of 2020 and the top two overall creator of the year, according to the platform. The green faceless avatar who is adept at discovering "Minecraft's" cavern-filled secrets has managed to gain more than 16 million users in less than two years. What is it that makes Dream so special and popular, when there are thousands of content creators who have created worlds with Minecraft's characteristic blocks?
Who is Dream?
Dream's personal life and identity are still unknown, with the sleepy-named YouTuber preferring to keep his image secret. His online avatar is a simple, neon green model. The style of the figure is famous, and easily recognizable to the typical "Minecraft" viewer.
As YouTuber Mysticat says, "Dream's branding is unprofessional but that doesn't mean it's bad. Dream utilizes a Microsoft Paint drawn character that's hilarious and appealing to kids, which is Minecraft's core target audience."
Although Dream began his YouTube channel in 2014 it's not clear whether he uploaded any videos regularly until July of this year. In his first video, he purposefully "triggers" viewers by playing the game as badly as possible, doing things like placing blocks on top of chests, killing sheep for their wool and eating rotten flesh.
Dream began posting content more often after his first upload. Felix Kjellberg, known online as the wildly popular PewDiePie, had been playing "Minecraft" for his huge audience of over 100 million subscribers by this point. Dream managed to find a way to re-engineer Kjellberg's "world seed," meaning, the randomly generated world his "Minecraft" game had created, using techniques he learned from forums. The video received 200,000 views within two days. He then made three videos that received more than two million views each. The star of his career was born when Dream had 54,000 subscribers by the end of July.
Dream's channel will continue to increase the number of millions and thousands subscribers over the coming months. However, his second breakthrough moment was in November 2019. Dream created a variety of videos that capitalized on the popular format "___ but it changes each time." His video , titled "Minecraft but Items Drops Are Random and Multiplied" ..." went viral, pulling in 32 million views and giving him 600,000 new subscribers.
Dream would upload frequently throughout the course of the year, steadily increasing hundreds and thousands of subscribers per month, and millions of views. His "Minecraft Speedrunner vs." series, where Dream would choose to complete the game while certain NPCs or non-player characters, chased after his pursuit, or set goals that had to be completed were hugely popular. He would also begin collaborating with GeorgeNotFound, his friend and later a member on Dream's roleplaying website which he launched in May 2020.
Dream has been accused of cheating in Minecraft
Dream's channel was at the highest level of growth in subscribers with 2.6 million subscribers by August 2020, and Dream becoming the main character of the game. He had uploaded a speedrun of the 1.14 version of Minecraft in March of 2020 and 1.15 in June, so when version 1.16 version came out later in the year, he needed to adopt it. He was pleased with the place he reached on the leaderboard , and finished his race in fifth place.
On December 11 of 2020, moderator of official speedrun forums Geosquare uploaded an YouTube video entitled "Did Dream Fake His Speedruns Official Moderator Analysis." Geosquare and his fellow Minecraft moderators had looked over the livestreams and concluded that Dream had recorded events that were too statistically unlikely to have happened without the help of cheaters or mods. The moderators analyzed the 29-page document and concluded that Dream was 1 in 1.75 trillion likely to have found the necessary items to play the game.
Dream has denied any fraud or wrongdoing in a variety of Twitter threads and videos. In his own video addressing the claims posted on December 23, Dream shared a research study that he commissioned using analysis company Photoexcitation that found that the probabilities of his run occurring were in fact 1 out of 100 million.
Dream's study was dismissed by speedrunning mods who then released another five-page document. Dream responded in one final tweet, writing that "this drama has been stressful for most of the Minecraft community and a lot of that is probably due to my initial response to the drama, so I am fully responsible for that."
Dream was subject to Doxxing, harassment, and even doxxing
On January 1, 2021, Dream fans managed to locate his house using a photo of his kitchen that was posted on his second account and then shared the details, a violation of privacy, referred to as doxxing.
Dream expressed his opinion about the incident in a Twitlonger on January 7th. He also spoke about his ex-girlfriend, whom he believes is spreading false reports. Dream denied her allegations and said he doesn't take any interest in YouTube. He also stated that his friends who appear on his videos don't receive the same percentage of his profits.
How Dream achieved the YouTube algorithm
His understanding of YouTube's algorithm is the main reason for Dream's huge growth in 2019 and in 2020.

He makes use of keywords in the right places and makes use of trends to create thumbnails that fans will be compelled to click. Similar to the genius of Jimmy Donaldson, the highly-popular Mr. Beast creates in his videos, Dream has figured out how to make it on YouTube.
