The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first bike tunnel, opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle route is located around Jerusalem.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem.


The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened at a formal ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Elkin explained that nowadays along with its rich history, the tunnel project also includes modern tourism. "The launch of the tunnel is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem's city Jerusalem as well as its development into a desirable city that is attractive to all types of visitors throughout Israel and around the globe."

Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the development of all aspects of Jerusalem's tourism and also in the development of innovative activities and ventures that connect the glorious historical past of our capital city's eternal past to the future of Jerusalem... I would like to invite you to ride your bicycles on a scenic, well-maintained route that overlooks Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality, and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.

Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an crucial tool to realize the goal to transform the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem. "The tunnel, which connects to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will join existing bike routes in the city as well as those that will be paved in its various neighborhoods, in the hope of encouraging cycling among the city's residents as well as its visitors, and also in promoting the green revolution in transportation in the capital city."

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers as well as modern electrical and safety systems, to make the tunnel safe for people to walk through throughout the year.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation sites - including the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo, aquarium and the along with the historic natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
