Neve Paritzki (נווה פריצקי)Israel's first cycling tunnel is inaugurated in Jerusalem

The Kerem Tunnel allows for a an experience that is unique in terms of hiking and riding.
As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem's capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entry is located in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is just half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened in a ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a major tourist attraction due to its rich history. Nowadays, aside from its historical treasures it also has modern-day tourism." Elkin said. "The launch of the tunnel project is another part of the development of Jerusalem's city Jerusalem as well as its development into an attractive tourist city for all types of visitors in Israel and around the globe."


Elkin the minister whose ministry as well as the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, said that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels per year to develop all aspects of Jerusalem's visitors and in the design and operation of new tourist attractions, ventures, and activities which connect the rich past of Jerusalem to its future". I would like to invite cyclists to ride a secure and modernized route that will take you through Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the vision to transform the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem," Elkin emphasized. "The new tunnel that connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing bicycle paths and ones that are paved in its neighborhoods. The goal is to promote biking among its residents and promote the green movement in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line towards Sorek's purification plant.

Road construction, installation , and testing of safety and electrical systems are some of the ongoing works to ensure the tunnel is safe for all seasons.

The Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreation areas, like Ein Kerem, a neighborhood which has a Biblical zoo and aquarium as well as historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
