The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.


The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entrance is below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was inaugurated on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon and a plethora of other cyclists also attended.

I invite cycling enthusiasts to join us and take a ride along the modern and well-maintained cycle route that takes in the unique scenery of Old Jerusalem."

"The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the vision to alter the notion of transportation across Jerusalem," Elkin said. Elkin said that the new tunnel is connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike trails. The tunnel will also be made paved in its different neighborhoods. It will also help cyclists and promote green transport in Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move the main sewer line toward Sorek's purification plant.

In order to make the tunnel accessible to the public year-round, the works include road construction, as well as installation of blowers.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation spots such as the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium, and the historical natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
