The Kerem Tunnel is the first bicycle tunnel in Israel and was opened as a part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around the capital.


It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially opened by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister ZeevElkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company Chairman, and hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich past. Elkin declared that, in the present aside from its historical treasures it also incorporates modern tourists. Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the idea to change the concept of transportation across Jerusalem," Elkin said. Elkin said that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike paths. The tunnel will also be paved in its different areas. It will also increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Current projects include road construction, installation blowers and advanced safety equipment to ensure the tunnel is secure for everyone to use throughout the year.
