'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little over one year after launching Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game later this year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30, 2021 to play the augmented reality game. It's not available to download from the app marketplaces and is not available to download.



Developer Mojang Studios blamed the coronavirus pandemic and the changes to day-to-day life that have come with it for the closure. The company said that Minecraft Earth was built around collaborative play and free movement. Similar to Niantic with Pokemon Go, Mojang had tweaked the game to make it easier to play at home. The changes weren't enough, however.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft), January 5 2021. But there's a silver lining to the news of today: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth with style. Mojang is rolling out one final update to the game it says contains modifications "to ensure that your time on Minecraft Earth as fun as possible." Among other tweaks that the update removes of real-money transactions and dramatically reduces the amount of time it will take players to create and build things within the game. It also lets players view all the content Mojang had been working on prior to the announcement today. "We believe these changes will allow players to play, explore, craft and build more - while staying safe indoors," the studio said.



After June 30th comes and ends, Microsoft will delete player data on July 1st. You'll be rewarded with a token if you make a purchase in Minecraft Earth during the game's life. This token will enable you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft to your phone. You can find more details regarding the closure on the Minecraft website.



This is a disappointing ending for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. Microsoft had high hopes for the game when it first showcased at WWDC 2019. Minecraft servers list The fact Minecraft Earth couldn't survive through the epidemic, despite all the resources of Microsoft at its disposal isn't a positive indication of the future of consumer AR applications.



"We're forever thankful for the talent in the Minecraft community," Mojang said. "This was not an easy decision. We're doing everything we can to ensure you get the most enjoyment from Minecraft Earth before it goes dark."
