Lego takes on Minecraft by introducing a video game
2 June 2015
Lego is a Danish toy maker has announced a new video game similar to Minecraft.
Lego Worlds is now available for purchase at PS11.99 via the Steam gaming platform. The game's final release, featuring classic and contemporary playsets as well as famous mini-figures, will be released in 2016.
Feedback from players will be used to add features.
Lego already sells Minecraft playsets, allowing gamers to physically build their virtual creations. Lego Worlds invites fans to do the opposite.
Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games, which will release Lego Worlds the game, said it "embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that people have enjoyed for a long time, on a digital platform that offers a completely new kind of experience with the beloved bricks".
He said, "From the brick-by–brick editor to a wide selection of items, characters and creatures to fill your worlds - there are endless possibilities for creativity."
Favourite toy
Daniel Goldberg, who wrote a book on the growth of Minecraft and Minecraft, said he was "surprised" that it took so long.
He said that Minecraft was exactly what Lego could have done 10 years ago.
"I'm certain it will be a huge success for them."
Markus Persson, the Swedish game developer who created Minecraft, has not hidden his affection for Lego. It appears that the admiration is mutual.
In the past, David Gram, Lego's marketing director, said "Minecraft is a digital Lego. some forums It's an excellent idea but we would have liked to have invented it.
Mr Goldberg believes that Mr Persson who is also known as Notch will be "flattered by the outcome of the game."
He said that Lego was his favorite toy when he was a kid, and that it was the inspiration behind Minecraft. It was nice to see the toys come full circle."
"I do not think there will be any animosity. Games developers in general tend to be flattered when someone copies an existing game."
Lego is not just designed for children, but also serious adult fans.
Minecraft which was acquired by Microsoft last year, has also been able to attract both children and adults.
"The gamers who play Minecraft has proven to be quite big and I'm sure there will be room for both games," said Mr Goldberg.
