'Suffering from RSP?

Article content A commercial that compared RSPs to depression was pulled down following a complaint by mental health professionals and customers as being insensitive.

Article content ING Direct Canada's most recent commercial, "Are you Suffering?" depicts a sad man seated on his couch. The viewers soon learn that his wife took care of his "condition" by taking the man to ING.ca.

According to a statement issued by Mark Nicholson, the head of digital and interactive for ING in Toronto, research indicated RSP season brought feelings of anxiety, stress and confusion in their customers. The team wanted to communicate that they could help.

Peter Coleridge, CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) posted a comment on MarketingMag.ca calling the advertisements "insensitive and disrespectful" while Camille Quennville, CEO of the CMHA's Ontario chapter, said the ads were "offensive" and reaffirmed "the stigma that keeps people from seeking the assistance they require.

Rand MacIvor shared his thoughts on the content of articles via the ING DIRECT Canada Facebook Page.

"As an individual suffering from an illness that is chronic, I find the RSP commercial personally offensive...There are people suffering and this ING commercial shams down their condition," MacIvor wrote. "Did they test this? With sick people? Maybe they're not ING's target audience. Evidently, I'm not."

When similar consumer complaints began to flood in, the mediators at Facebook tried to take over the matter.

"While we never intended to minimize any mental health-related health concerns, we have listened to you. We have made the decision to take down our RSP commercial from TV," they commented on posts complaining about the ad. Sure "It could take several days to get it off the air, but the process is already in motion. If you're upset by the commercial, we sincerely ask our apologies.

The timing of the commercial was also criticised. Bell Let's Talk Day 2013, which is a day to raise awareness about mental health and stigma, will take place on February 12.
