It turns out that the server troubles experienced by Minecraft last week -- which resulted in an unplanned weekend of free-to-play- might have served as an excellent marketing tool for the indie world-building game. This free weekend, coupled with Penny Arcade exposure, may have made its players thirsty for a legitimate version of the game. According to a Minecraft sales tracking site the game was purchased 25,936 times within the 24 days following its return on Wednesday. This brought Markus Persson somewhere in the vicinity of $350,000
Although sales have slowed since the servers' resurrection but they're still much higher than prior to the free weekend. This is a significant amount of money, but it's nothing in comparison to the wages the game's players have lost due to investing their entire lives in DIY projects. We'd like to re-do the marble floors of our palace, complete the diamond tower, and block this lake. So little time We mean it this time!
