Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an easy game that comes with it) has a major new release out with Minetest 5.4.0 and it's worth a second go.

As we've already mentioned in the release Candidate stage of the release, this version makes it easier to modify small mod packs, as well as whole games. So little time Minetest was previously a way for players to browse and download mods directly from the game. However, it now also downloads all dependencies mods need which makes it much easier to find what you need and then load it into the game. There's no need to download one mod, then finding all the individual bits it requires.

The built-in game "Minetest Game" was also given some enhancements. While quite bare-bones by itself but it can be an excellent platform to showcase the engine and for extending by adding mods. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now has crafting guides, 5 more wood variants and environmental sounds for lava and active furnaces, new translations , and numerous bug fixes. It continues to build on the gradual and steady progress into something a bit bigger out of the box.

Other options include the ability to change the cross-hair when you are pointing at objects, freely binding mouse buttons, name tags for players now have semi-transparent backgrounds as well as a caverns feature to generate flat maps, and the 'place' and 'fig keys are easily set up. There are many bug fixes, including the inability for players not to gain access to the inventories of other players.

Pictured Minetest 5.4.0 with a few mods.

Really great to discover this free and open source game engine and game working so well. According to the official server list, it appears like a large number of people regularly play various games with Minetest and there are hundreds of players online when this article goes live - awesome!
