Mojang's breakout smash Minecraft came in second place on a Google-issued list of the most popular YouTube search terms of 2014. It was ranked immediately just behind "music" in terms of search frequency.
According to Google the term "Minecraft" was the most frequently searched on YouTube in 2014 than "movies." Gaming personality PewDiePie also ranked among YouTube's top searches in 2014, lagging the queries for Disney's Frozen as well as for musicians Drake and Beyonce.

Google reports that user searches and engagement with gaming-related content are on the rise even though the majority of users don't necessarily identify as gamers. YouTube videos from the "Gaming" category topped the top of the service's Top 10 Most Popular list on a variety of days in October of 2014.
"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 among those who reported watching gaming videos on YouTube found that only a fraction of this group (37%) consider themselves gamers"" the report says. "When asked about their motivations for watching gaming videos, gamers were able to mention 'humor' and entertainment frequently, but also were asked about 'learning new strategies' or 'game tips.'"
The report continues: "We also wanted to find out why they watch videos by creators like PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. Quite a few fans answered"because they're hilarious!' Some even compared these videos to stand-up comedy. An up-and-coming gaming creator summed up interest with the following analogy: "You don't have to play soccer to watch it on television.'"
