Minecraft Game Adds Ordnance Survey GB Terrain Data

Minecraft game adds Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News

23 September 2013

Minecraft, the highly popular building and monsters video game, can now incorporate precise Ordnance Survey terrain data of Great Britain in its blockwork virtual world.

The game's 33 million gamers can build worlds atop of geographically accurate landscapes representing 224,000 sq km (86,000 sq miles) of Britain.

The GB Minecraft world was created in two weeks by intern Joseph Braybrook working with OS's Innovation Labs team.

It utilizes OS OpenData products for free.

Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, said that "we think we may have constructed the largest Minecraft world ever" Based on real-world data.

"The resulting map shows the huge potential, not just to use Minecraft for the purposes of geography and computer technology in schools, but the huge scope of applications that can be made with OS OpenData too."

Minecraft, created by Swede Markus "Notch" Persson in 2009 It is a world made of cubes made up of different materials, including lava, sand, rock and sand.

Players can collaborate to construct shelters, create things out of raw materials, and fight off various creatures.

More than 22 billion Minecraft blocks are contained in the OS GB world.

After downloading the map into Minecraft, players can enter the 3D virtual world through OS's headoffice in Southampton. From there, they can recreate real-life features such as Stonehenge or imagine buildings such as Hogwarts castle.

The OS map products - OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap together to create a 3D model of the earth's surface that is layered with features such as roads, woodland, and water.

You can build your own structures using the top.

OS is the country's main mapping authority. Its maps cover the mainland and surrounding islands, but not Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
