Millions of devices are vulnerable to attacks due to a vulnerability called Log4Shell in the open-source log library Log4j. The Verge points out that apps and services keep records of all events that occur during their operation, giving them the ability to analyse how their program is running and also to determine what went wrong if there are errors. Log4j is a well-known and widely used logging library, and even popular cloud services like Steam and iCloud and applications like Amazon, Twitter and Minecraft are said to be susceptible to attacks exploiting Log4Shell.
According to Ars Technica, it first became apparent when Minecraft websites began to report about vulnerabilities that allow hackers to execute malicious code within the game. MINECRAFT SERVERS It was soon apparent that the issue doesn't impact Minecraft only. Security researcher Marcus Hutchins, who helped stop the spread of the WannaCry malware, described the vulnerability "extremely grave" because millions of applications utilize Log4j to log data.
Criminals could use it to remotely execute code on servers, which could cause them to download and run malware that could compromise businesses and personal data. It's easy to attack and can be triggered by simply posting messages. Hutchins said that in the case of Minecraft hackers were capable of executing code remotely through the posting of a message in the chatbox. LunaSec an app security company said that opening the vulnerability on Apple's server servers is done by simply changing the name of an iPhone.
Log4j has already issued an update for the vulnerability, and affected services like Minecraft and Cloudflare have already issued patches to safeguard users. Log4j users who run their own networks may be tempted to update their systems as soon as they can, if it is possible.
