Microsoft recognizes that Minecraft can inspire kids to learn programming, and is betting on that strategy again this year. It has teamed up with Code.org to introduce the Minecraft Hour of Code Designer tutorial, which teaches young newcomers (6 years old and older) how to design a simple game. The Designer utilizes a drag-and drop interface to show familiar code concepts, such as object-oriented programming and loops, while letting imaginations run wild in Minecraft's blocky universe. You can make chickens that drop gold, and other rules that are as sensible or absurd as you'd like.
The tutorial is available in 10 languages and will be available in 50 languages when Computer Science Education Week begins on December 5th. Of course, this course won't be as easy as learning a programming language. Microsoft and Code.org hope that this will teach children the importance of programming languages and help them begin an exciting career in computer science.
