Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: 'It's about my sanity'



After Microsoft announced it would buy Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5bn, (PS1.5bn), Markus Persson, the Swedish developer behind Markus Persson - also known as Notch -- released his own personal statement regarding the purchase. Below is the complete statement.



Mojang has left me



I don't consider myself a game developer. I make games for amusement and because I love programming. But I don't want to create huge hits. I also don't want to make a difference in the world.



Minecraft certainly became a huge success and people are telling me that it's changed the way games are played. I never intended to change anything in the first place. It's certainly pleasing and to slowly get placed in a public spotlight is interesting.



It was a long time ago that I made the decision to quit Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to take over the helm of the project, and I was eager to experiment with things that were completely new. In the beginning, I failed in my attempt to create something huge again however, since I've decided to stick to small prototypes and interesting problems, I've had so much fun with work.



I wasn't entirely sure how I would fit in Mojang where people did actual work, but because my friends said I was important for the culture, I stayed.



A few weeks ago I was suffering from a terrible cold at home. The internet was abuzz with rage about me due to an EULA situation that I did not have. I was confused. Just say yes I didn't understand. I posted this frustration on Twitter.



Later, I looked at the This is Phil Fish YouTube video and realized that I didn't feel the connection I thought I did with my fans. I've become a symbol. I don't want to be a symbol, with a responsibility for something massive that I don't know, that I do not want to tackle that constantly comes back to me. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not an executive director. I am a geeky computer programmer who enjoys posting my opinions on Twitter.



As soon as this deal is completed, I will leave Mojang and return to Ludum Dares and other small web-based experiments. If I make an error and it gains traction I will probably abandon it right away.



Considering the public image of me is already a bit skewed I don't think I'll get away from negative comments through this but at least I won't have a need to read them.



This is contrary to a lot of my public statements. I don't have an answer to that. I am also aware that many of you used me as a symbol to represent some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a human being and I'm struggling with you.



You are my best friend. You are all incredible. Thank you for making Minecraft what it is today. There are just too many of us, and I can't be accountable for something as huge as Minecraft. It is Microsoft's property now in a certain sense. It's been a part of your lives for a long time, and will remain yours.



It's not about the money. It's about my sanity.
