If you can see 120 frames per second on your gaming laptop's screen is twice as good as 60 frames-per-second, then surely eight times as many frames is eight times better do you think? This is the reasoning behind the latest super high-refresh rate panels on Alienware gaming laptops. The Dell subsidiary is now selling its M17 R5 and x17R2 17-inch laptops with new panels, which are claimed to be the most efficient in the industry.
The panels are limited to 1080p resolution with that amazing refresh rate, but that's probably the best option. You'll have to be running an application that can produce nearly 500 frames per second for you to experience the benefits. Turn off ray-tracing, and opt for Minecraft-grade textures, I suppose. The new panel comes with an average response time of 3ms and is compatible with both AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync, dependent on the GPU configuration. The upgrade is an extra $300 over the 165Hz base screen, which works out to 95 cents per hertz.
Just say yes
I've seen screens with 120hz compared to 240hz at trade show demonstrations and I was convinced that even ultra-fast gamers can benefit from them. But doubling that speed yet again? I'm dubious that it can improve the actual performance of gamers - I'm sure it won't be able to double it, even for the most amazing eSports pros who have Special Eyes. Gaming equipment is famous for its extravagant overkill.
