Teenager Hacker who Created PS400,000 from Virus is Jailed for 2 Years

Adam Mudd, a computer hacker was imprisoned for two years

A teenage computer hacker who earned nearly PS400,000 by creating a programme which was used in 1.7 million attacks from 'Greenland to New Zealand' was jailed for two years on the day of today.

Adam Mudd, now 20 Adam Muddd, now 20, sold access to the Titanium Stresser tool which let users crash computers and websites by flooding them with data.

He created the distributed denial-of-service software, also known as DDoS in his bedroom, and began selling it to criminals when at 16 years old.

More than 650,000 victims were targeted in the 1.7 million attacks of which 52,000 victims were in Britain.

Victims included Xbox Live users, and players of the computer games Runescape and Minecraft.

Runescape was targeted 25,000 times, 1.4 per cent of the total attacks, and in the last four years , the company has spent more than PS6million attempting to protect themselves from hackers.

Mudd earned a total of $307 298.35 and 259.81 Bitcoins, which was worth an aggregate of PS386,079 by when he reached the age of 18.

He also made use of the username "themuddfamily" to carry out almost 600 attacks on 181 victims all from his bedroom in Kings Langley.

He studied at West Hertfordshire College in 2014. It was the site of a large-scale attack that could have affected 70 schools and universities nearby, including the University of Cambridge.

The Old Bailey heard that he attacked his college four more times throughout the year. He later claimed that it was due to being mugged however no action was taken.

This map shows the locations of the 1.7 million attacks carried out worldwide by hackers using Mudd’s program. The key shows the number of attacks that were executed in specific countries.

Last October, Mudd was convicted of computer hacking and money laundering.

Today he was sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution.

The defendant showed no emotion as his sentence was read as his parents were in the well of the court.

The defense had offered Mudd two weeks of paid work in cybersecurity and the judge refused their request to suspend the sentence.
