Minecraft awarded GameCity videogame art prize Leo Kelion Technology reporter
29 October 2011
Minecraft has been awarded a new award for creativity in computer games.
The GameCity videogame festival ended in Nottingham and the prize was announced.
Mojang, an Swedish company that is independent of the title, developed the title. Players have to build objects from blocks in an open space.
The game was selected over other releases, including Southend Interactive's Ilomilo by Valve and Game Freak's Pokemon Noir from Game Freak.
"It's a great honour to be compared with those games," said Markus Persson Mojang's founder.
"Winning this award helps us in our efforts at making Minecraft the most enjoyable game it can be."
Nearly four million users have already bought the title on the internet, despite the fact that it is still in beta. It will be released in a formal way in the next month.
It was like it was growing and it wasn't like any other. It was organic in its nature," one of the judges, Ed Hall, told the BBC.
"It's easy and addictive, and there's beauty in the work you do."
Confident and confident in the culture
GameCity's director, Iain Simons, said he was "delighted" by the choice.
The festival is now in its sixth year. He says he's witnessed a rise in the average age of players and more women attracting to the festival over the years.
He said, "There is a much greater number of people who play games."
"They have become more commonplace, they have become more culturally confident, and this prize the festival is very much concerned with the development of the power of confidence."
The growth of smartphones is a part of the reason behind this phenomenon. The popularity of the sophisticated games that are now possible thanks to smartphones today is largely due to the growth in the use of smartphones.
The possibilities for developers are undoubtedly increased by advances in computer processors graphics chips, processors, and other technologies. However, Mr. Simon is not convinced that the developments have any impact on designers their status as artists.
"I think that technology is a red herring. What technology is driving is the ability of games to appear more realistic. To look as if the triple-A blockbuster might look like," he said.
"I do not believe they are art in and of themselves. We wouldn't be crying at Bambi. It's not all about photorealism.
The contest's judges seem to be in agreement and admit they chose the most basic title available.
The jury was comprised of 13 people, including Dr Who actress Frances Barber, Labour MP Tom Watson and the artistic director of London's Southbank centre, Jude Kelly.
Enhancing life
There was a lack of consensus about Minecraft's merits at first. The composer, Nitin Sawhney, who was on the panel as well, was critical of the soundtrack.
However, neither the music or the style of the game could have been fatal to its chances.
"[We] asked if there was any that we felt was superior to the rest. Was there any merit to the game enhancing life and enjoyment beyond playing the game itself? Could it help you see the world of the world more positive?" Mr. Hall said.
Best Minecraft Minigames
"Could an electronic game be considered to be something that can be played in the future?"
Minecraft is a game that includes the traditional elements of gaming, like night-roaming monsters as well as the chance to battle online multiplayer battles.
It was chosen because of its ability to motivate gamers and its mood.
Mr. Hall stated, "It's a broad definition of art that is available."
"But computer games are certainly artistic. There are images and stories that will entice you with ideas that will be a puzzle to your mind for hours, and a whole package that will keep you coming back for days."
