Adaptasi adalah cara makhluk hidup untuk menyesuaikan diri dengan lingkungan hidup dimana mereka tinggal. Adaptasi ini diperlukan oleh makhluk hidup, karena setiap lingkungan memiliki karakteristik sendiri. Misalkan dikutub suhunya sangat dingin serta banyak terdapat air sedangkan sebaliknya di daerah gurun suhunya panas dan sulit mendapat air. Oleh karena itu, ditempat tersebut makhluk hidupnya memiliki bentuk dan karakteristik berbeda untuk menyesuaikan diri dengan lingkungannya.
Lingkungan tempat makhluk hidup berkembang biak disebut dengan habitat. Umumnya, makhluk hidup yang sudah beradaptasi dilingkungan tertentu sulit untuk beradaptasi ditempat lain. Kecuali manusia, karena memiliki otak dan pikiran sebagai alat untuk beradaptasi dengan berbagai lingkungan yang ada. Otak dan pikiran ini digunakan untuk menyesuaikan lingkungan dengan kemauannya. Misalkan, dikutub itu dingin maka ia membuat rumah yang berbentuk seperti kubah karena dengan bentuk seperti itu maka suhu didalamnya akan lebih hangat.
