After Minecraft Says No to NFTs, NFT Worlds Pledges to Create its own Game

Mojang made waves yesterday when it said in unambiguous terms, that NFTs are not allowed in Minecraft (opens in a new tab). This is good news for players, but not for those who have already committed to using blockchain technology in games like NFT Worlds.

"NFT Worlds," a completely decentralized, fully customizable and community-driven, play-to ear gaming platform where world owners can create limitless metaverse experiences or games for players or communities within the worlds they own," its website (opens new tab).

"Currently using Minecraft and its sprawling open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the foundation of a decade's worth of open source development within the Minecraft community. It radically extends it to allow an entirely new types of 3D game based on voxels, which is decentralized metaverses, backed by the Ethereum blockchain."

What this means, in essence is that it allows custom Minecraft servers that allow players to buy virtual land and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency-the kind of hybrid system that Mojang's blockchain policy seems specifically aimed at shutting down. And it definitely had an impact the price of $WRLD (opens in a new tab) tanked badly immediately following the announcement by the studio.

In response to Mojang's recent policy, NFT Worlds has issued an announcement (opens in a new tab) decrying Mojang and Minecraft as having "no regard for builders, creators, and players," and vowing to develop its own game to take over the game.

"We're developing a brand new game and platform that is based on the basic mechanics of Minecraft but with the advancement of technology and ongoing development Minecraft has been absent for years," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a remake of an open source Minecraft replica, which could infringe the EULA or still risk legal action, this is entirely built from scratch. This transition will additionally come with a public facing brand identity that is more user-friendly."

The Future Of NFT Worlds Read our statement below through the attached Twitter thread, or here: https://t.co/w0nf1f2xxnA thread pic.twitter.com/Oy2T7oXQVgJuly 22, 2022

The game will feature a "playstyle as well as a look and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said it will also feature performance optimizations, graphics enhancements and new mechanisms that will give players "a more accessible, ownable and enjoyable experience." It will be free to all players, and "completely free of the policies that Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." https://alusky.xyz/ At the same time, it will also be compatible with older Minecraft server plugins, which means that when it is time to switch platforms creators of content will be in a position to move with minimal fuss and muss.

Making a better Minecraft than Minecraft (while keeping compatibility with Minecraft) is a large undertaking, and one that would invite some immediate and severe examination from Microsoft, but NFT Worlds doesn't have many alternatives. Mojang has effectively closed the door on its business model, but a wholesale switch to a brand new game would leave the existing users, and everything they've built so far, in the cold. The only way to keep the wheels turning is to come up with something that functions like Minecraft without actually being Minecraft. This isn't an easy task.

NFT Worlds stated that it will make changes to its launcher and play pages in order to attract new players not attracted by the cryptocurrency angle. It also outlined some very importantstakes, with high stakes for NFT Worlds future as a battle for both the technological and philosophical soul of the internet.

NFT Worlds stated that Microsoft has made it clear that they will always do what is in the best interest of their shareholders and balance sheets, to the detriment of the player experience, innovation and creators. "We believe an open, free, and a more evolved version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world can be the best option for developers, creators and ultimately gamers.

"We are fighting for a future where every person benefits from the ecosystem's contributions. We recognize this is a monumental task."

I have reached out to Microsoft to find out their thoughts regarding the NFT Worlds plan. I will make changes to this post if I receive a reply.
