Minecraft and NFTs

We've received feedback from the community recently seeking clarity and transparency regarding Mojang Studios' and Minecraft's positions on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

We are currently updating our Minecraft Usage Guides to provide more specific guidance on new technologies. We wanted to let you know that integrations of NFT with Minecraft are not something we would recommend or allow. Let's take a closer look.

WHAT IS A NFT?

An NFT is an exclusive, non-editable digital token that is part of a cryptocurrency and typically purchased using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. An NFT can be used in conjunction with any type of digital asset, such as an MPEG or a GIF however, the most popular use case today is digital art, such as JPEGs. An NFT is the token that identifies the owner of the original digital file. However any digital file can be copied, deleted or moved. Blockchain and NFTs have been linked to speculation. This is the reason why prices can be soaring quickly and, as we have seen, they can fall rapidly.

How will this affect me?

We strongly suggest to review the following information if are a creator or player involved in the trading buying or selling of NFTs that use Minecraft (like worlds and skins). If not, the changes won't impact you.

OUR POLICY ON MINECRAFT AND NFTS

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how a server owner may charge for access and how all players should have the same functionality. These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains an open community that gives everyone access to the same content. NFTs, however, can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our Guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.

Blockchain technology is not permitted to be integrated into our client or server applications. Neither may Minecraft game-related content such as worlds, skins and persona items be used by blockchain technology to create a unique digital asset. These are the reasons we have.

Certain companies have recently launched NFT implementations that integrate with Minecraft world skin packs and files. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain can be used in conjunction with Minecraft include the creation of Minecraft collectible NFTs that allow players to earn NFTs by performing activities on a server, or earning Minecraft NFT rewards for doing activities outside of the game.

Each of these uses for NFTs and other Blockchain technologies creates digital ownership that is dependent on scarcity or the exclusion of. This is not in the spirit of Minecraft values of inclusion through creativity and playing with others, as well as sharing our resources. NFTs do not include everyone in our community and create a conflict between the haves and the not-so-haves. The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is incompatible with the long-term happiness and success of our players.

We are also concerned that some third-party NFTs may not be reliable and may end up costing players who buy them. Third-party NFT implementations could be dependent on blockchain technology. They may need an asset manager who can disappear without notice. There have instances where NFTs were sold at fraudulently or artificially price increases. We recognize the intrinsic value of creation within our game and aim to create a market where those values are recognized.

To ensure Minecraft players enjoy a safe and enjoyable experience Blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. They cannot also be used to create NFTs using any in-game content including skins and worlds, persona items, or other mods. We will also be watching closely how blockchain technology develops over time to ensure the above principles are withheld and to determine whether it will provide more secure gaming or other inclusive and practical applications in gaming. We are not planning to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft at this time.

We're hoping to share more with you soon. We have our guidelines here, but in the meantime, we'll have more to share with you. Keep an eye out!
