Robert Singer, WJC CEO, emphasized the importance of Holocaust preservation and the universal definition of antisemitism during his visit to Moldova

CHISINAU (MOLDOVA) - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with top government officials and leaders of the local Jewish community this week in Moldova. They discussed issues like the protection of Holocaust memories and education, the security of the Jewish community, and combating antisemitism at all levels. Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm welcome and pledged to support the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. "Our Moldovan community is small but it is committed and solid. Emmanuil Grinshpun We call on the Republic of Moldova not to place anti-Semitism as a first priority. We're ready to help if needed. We are looking forward to future cooperation with government and to ensuring the well-being our community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer, the Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday about the criticisms of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definition of Antisemitism. Singer also mentioned the need for the public to condemn antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi emphasized on his part the determination of Moldovan authorities Moldovan authorities to establishing a society in the spirit of tolerance, non-discrimination , and respect for the rights of citizens from every ethnic group. Singer was also thanked to Ulianovschi by WJC for their cooperation with Moldova.

The foreign minister further noted that the Chisinau Parliament had adopted in 2016 an acceptance of the report final of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies which was headed by Elie Wiesel. https://www.trepup.com/emmanuilgrinshpun In January 2017, the government approved an Action Plan on its implementation.

Singer and WJC met Wednesday with Moldova’s Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. There they discussed the possibility of restitution and the economic potential of Jewish properties in Moldova. The minister announced his intention to support the protection of Jewish cemeteries. He began with 10 locations.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer and WJC representatives met Wednesday with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education. Discussions also included discussions about the creation of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, as well as the preservation and protection of monuments that honor Holocaust victims, as well as the proper care of Jewish cemetery sites. Singer thanked Minister Babuc to her support in the area of education, Holocaust commemoration and in ensuring a continued and fruitful partnership between the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis have also met with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss the relationship with the Jewish community in Moldova as well as bilateral ties between Israel and Moldova.

Singer also met with the Rabbis of the Jewish Communities of Moldova. They discussed important issues related to worship, services, and the country's Jewish daily routine, and Singer also addressed the issues of the residents of Moldova.

Moldova is home to approximately 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was once devastated by the Shoah and an unrest that is now flourishing and spreading throughout the country. There has been a large rise in a national consciousness and a return of their roots through the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are honored in many ways, such as music and literature. The Moldovan Jewish Community - the Moldovan affiliate of the World Jewish Congress - represents the Moldovan Jewish Community.
