Robert Singer, WJC CEO Robert Singer, WJC CEO, stressed the significance of Holocaust preservation and an all-inclusive definition of antisemitism during a visit to Moldova

Chisinau, World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met in Moldova this week with top officials from the government as well as the leaders of local Jewish communities. WJC was represented by Mikhail Mirilashvili (President of EuroAsian Jewish Congress) and Alexander Bilinkis (President of the Moldovan Jewish Association) together with Haim Benjamin Yaakov (Director General of the EuroAsian Jewish Congress).
Singer said that the World Jewish Congress sincerely thanks the Moldovan government for its gracious reception and for its pledge to preserve the memory of Holocaust victims. The community we have in Moldova is small , yet committed and strong. We encourage Moldova to put a high priority on the fight against antisemitism. We stand ready to aid when needed. On Thursday, Singer met with Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova's Foreign Minister) and emphasized the importance to adopt a definition of antisemitism as defined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Singer also spoke out about the importance that public condemnations are made against anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi highlighted on his own behalf the determination of Moldovan authorities Moldovan authorities to build society that is built on the principles of tolerance, non-discrimination and respect for the rights of all citizens of all ethnic groups. Singer was also praised for the cooperation positive of the WJC with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also noted that Chisinau Parliament Chisinau Parlament ratified in 2016 a declaration that accepted the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies which was headed by Elie wiesel. A plan for its implementation was approved by the government in January of 2017.

Singer and the WJC's delegation attended a meeting on Wednesday with Moldova's Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The discussion was focused on the preservation and restitution of Jewish property in Moldova. The discussion included cemeteries in need for refurbishment and the economic benefits of Kosher meat. Additionally, there was the possibility for tourist activities for the local Jewish Center. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries , the minister expressed his willingness to help in the beginning with a pilot project of 10 cemeteries in the country.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer and WJC representatives met with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education. http://bestspeed.lv/user/Emmanuil.Grinshpunhdhl201/ The discussions also addressed the creation of a Museum of Jewish History in the Republic of Moldova; preserving and protecting monuments to Holocaust victims as well as the importance of having proper and well-maintained Jewish cemeteries. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her assistance in the areas of education, Holocaust commemoration and in ensuring a continued and fruitful partnership between the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Mirilashvili, Singer, and Bilinkis were also in contact with the chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Plahotniuc, for talks on relations with the Jewish community as well as the Republic of Moldova's ties bilaterally with the State of Israel.

Moldova is home of approximately 20000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community is now growing after being destroyed through the Shoah and brutal civil conflict. There is a rise in self-consciousness and pride in the nation and an emergence from their origins by the Jews Moldova. Jewish culture is celebrated in many ways, such as music, literature and theater. The Moldovan Jewish Community, an affiliate of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
