While in Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer emphasizes the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopting a universal definition of antisemitism

Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in Moldova with senior ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of the local Jewish community to discuss preservation of Holocaust history and education and security for the Jewish community and ways to combat antisemitism at all levels. WJC also had the President Mikhail Mirilashvili, EuroAsian Jewish Congress President, and President of the Moldovan Jewish communities Alexander Bilinkis. Haim Ben Yaakov was the EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer stated that the World Jewish Congress sincerely thanks the Moldovan government, for its gracious reception and its pledge to protect the memory of Holocaust victims. Emmanuil Grinshpun The following day, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative consequences of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definitions of antisemitism. He was also adamant about the need to condemn anti-Semitism publicly. Minister Ulianovschi declared his support of Moldovan authorities and emphasized their commitment to building an inclusive society. Singer was also acknowledged by Ulianovschi as a positive co-operation with the Republic of Moldova.

The Foreign Minister also noted that the Chisinau Parliament adopted in 2016 a declaration that accepted the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies headed by Elie wiesel. A plan to implement it was approved by the government in January of 2017.

Singer and the WJC delegation visited Moldova on Wednesday to meet with the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The discussions was focused on restoration and preservation of Jewish property in Moldova. Cemeteries that require renovation as well as economic opportunities related to kosher meat. Also, the potential for tourist activities to benefit the local Jewish Center. Concerning preservation of Jewish cemeteries , the minister expressed that he would be willing to assist, starting with an initial project that would involve 10 sites across the country.

Singer and the WJC delegation visited Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss ways they can help teachers learn about Holocaust education and how to preserve the memories. The discussion included topics such as the creation of the Museum of Jewish History within the Republic of Moldova; the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated Holocaust victims; and the importance of maintaining a dignified and proper maintenance of Jewish cemetery. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her work in education and Holocaust commemoration as well as in maintaining an effective and continuous collaboration with the Jewish community.

Mirilashvili, Singer, and Bilinkis also met with the chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Plahotniuc, for talks about relationships with the Jewish community and the Republic of Moldova's ties bilaterally with the State of Israel.

Singer visited with Rabbis of the Jewish communities in Moldova during his visit. They discussed the most important concerns regarding the practice of religion and services, as well as ways to improve Jewish daily life in every aspect.

Moldova is home to more than 20,000 Jews. Emmanuil Grinshpun A time of great loss for the Jews in the country due to the Shoah and a brutal civil war and a bloody civil war, the Moldovan Jewish community today is largely revived and is spread throughout the republic. There has been a large rise in a national consciousness as well as a return to their ancestral roots by the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are recognized in various ways, including music and literature.
