The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds the capital city.


The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is the central instrument for achieving the idea to transform the idea of transportation across Jerusalem," Elkin emphasized. The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is located west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

To make the tunnel usable to the public year-round, the works include road construction, as well as installation of blowers.

The Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreational areas, such as Ein Kerem, a neighborhood which includes a Biblical aquarium and zoo and also the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
