'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little over a year after bringing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game in the coming year. Minecraft Earth players have until June 30th, 2021, to play the augmented reality game before Microsoft shuts down its servers, and it's no longer available to download from app marketplaces.



Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus pandemic, and the changes to daily life that it has brought with it. "Minecraft Earth was designed to allow free movement and collaborative play which have become nearly impossible in the current global situation," the studio said. Similar to Niantic with Pokemon Go, Mojang had tweaked the game to make it easier to play at home. It's clear that these tweaks weren't enough.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft), January 5 2021. But there is some good news in today's news: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in style. Mojang is rolling out one last update for the game it says includes changes "to ensure that your time on Minecraft Earth as enjoyable as possible." In addition to other improvements that the update removes with real-money transactions and drastically reduces the amount of time it will take players to create and build things within the game. It also lets players look through all the content Mojang had been working on prior to today's announcement. "We hope that these changes will allow players to play, explore, craft and create more - while staying safe inside," the studio said.



Microsoft will delete player data on July 1, after June 30th is over. You'll get a token when you make purchases in Minecraft Earth during the game's duration. This token will enable you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft on your phone. More information about the shut-down on the Minecraft website.



For Microsoft, this is without a doubt a disappointing end to Minecraft Earth. Minecraft Servers Microsoft had high expectations for the game when it first demonstrated at WWDC 2019. It's not a great indication for consumers using AR applications in the near future that Minecraft Earth was unable to survive the pandemic with all of Microsoft’s resources.



Mojang stated that they will always be thankful for the extraordinary talent of the Minecraft community. "This was not an easy decision, and we're doing all we can to make sure you get the most of Minecraft Earth before it sunsets."
