'Minecraft' now has 112 million Monthly Players

Fortnite isn't the most popular game, but that doesn’t mean that it’s hurting other gaming phenomena. Microsoft's Helen Chiang told Business Insider in an interview that Minecraft now has 112 million active players each month, which is an increase of 20 million compared to figures as of October 2018. This is inclusive of all players, not just those who play the game via an Xbox Game Pass. However it's still an incredible achievement for a game that's existed in some form for over a decade.



Chiang said it partly due to the innovative game’s evergreen status -- people "keep returning" to it. It's possible to play Fortnite or other games that get the spotlight but there's a great chance you'll return to building homes and tunnels in Minecraft after that.



Other factors are likely important also. On top of its sheer ubiquity across platforms, Minecraft's blocky graphics and simple gameplay make it easy to play on devices with modest hardware, whether it's an affordable PC or smartphone. Microsoft's challenge is to keep the game relevant. The augmented reality aspect of Minecraft Earth helps, as does ray-tracing and other attempts to spruce up the look. But it's not clear if that's enough. Roblox recently crossed 100 million monthly users, and Fortnite may not be far off (it was reported to have 78.3 million users in August 2018). It won't take long for other games to capture popular culture.
