CRYPTOLOGY adalah cabang dari ilmu yang konsen pada komunikasi rahasia. Dua area dari cryptology adalah CRYPTOGRAPHY dan CRYPTANALISIS. Cryptography adalah cabang dari cryptology yang konsen pada perlindungan komunikasi dari orang yang tidak berhak. Code dan cipher yang digunakan untuk melindungi komunikasi disebut CRYPTOGRAPHIC SYSTEM. Aplikasi dari code dan cipher pada message untuk membuatnya tidak bisa dibaca disebut ENCRYPTION. Message yang dihasilkan disebut CRYPTOGRAM atau DESCRYPT. Cryptanalysis adalah cabang dari cryptology yang difokuskan dengan menyelesaikan cryptographic system yang digunakan dengan cara lain. Sebenarnya, Sandi dan Kode itu berbeda, Cipher (sandi) : lebih dominan menggunakan metode atau cara atau langkah; Sedangkan Code : lebih dominan memainkan simbol.
