Minecraft Player Spends two Years Building a Virtual City

Minecraft player works for two years creating a virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A Delaware student spent two years creating an imaginary world was named Titan City in Minecraft.

Titan City is comprised of 4.5 Million Minecraft building blocks. It also has 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells says it has taken the two years he spent to construct, averaging up to five hours per week on the project.

His first building was a virtual replica of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to finish.

The 19-year-old believes Titan City is not a real New York model.

He told the BBC, "It's inspired New York."

"A lot of people think it's a recreational activity but it's not."

He initially built the city using the Xbox 360 version, but the game has since been transferred to the PC version, which he claims offers more construction options.

Mr Parcells plans to add an airport and the construction of a sports stadium.

"I believe it's an outlet for energy and architecture," he said.

"I've always loved architecture. I am most satisfied with Victorian-style buildings which are more traditional and less art deco.

"A majority of people stop by and want to walk around and explore, or assist with the building. A lot of them help with the construction of roads."

While Titan City has received a warm welcome online, Mr Parcells said that to date he has kept his virtual world afloat from his everyday life.

"I've kept it a secret It's like a second life I'm not talking about, but people are beginning to find out," he said.

"My parents think it's cool . I'm guessing they're just happy I don't play it too often."

Microsoft recently agreed to buy Minecraft Studio Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game reached its 100 millionth player in February 2014, its inventor Markus Persson, aka Notch, announced on Twitter.

After the initial purchase, Minecraft is free to download and play. However there are in-game purchases available.

The game is played in a virtual space composed of cubes crafted from various materials. Almost all of these are able to be used as building blocks, and some can be refined into usable raw materials (wood, iron, diamond etc).

The game demands you to survive by using blocks to build shelters and turn raw materials and their combinations into items (swords and bows, armor, etc.) to fight the many monsters that are in the game.
