Minecraft has definitely gained popularity in the past decade or since its release in 2009/2010. it's been one of the most successful games in history in terms of sales, and possibly in terms of influence.
Despite this, I've always thought that the latest versions of MC don't really encapsulate the same spirit as older versions (Beta 1.7.3 and earlier). Both are fantastic, I'm not going to lie. However, I think they are two completely different products that cannot be comparably.
Modern Minecraft versions are more RPG-like to me, removing some of the isolation that the Alpha and Beta versions left you feeling. The older versions don't offer as many tasks, which means you'll need to be able to think on your feet to enjoy yourself. In the newer versions though, there seems (could be wrong though) to be a few set tasks that you have to do (like collect food for the constantly-decreasing hunger bar), so you'd usually always have something to do because the game's told you that you have to do it (if that makes any sense)!
My Experience
I play NSSS, ClassiCube, or AlphaPlace for the majority of the time.
ClassiCube
ClassiCube is an open-source remake of Minecraft Classic 0.30 made for modern-day use and written in C and available on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, browser and even Android (although it's still in alpha). When you launch the game in Singleplayer mode, you're instantly thrown into a 0.30-style map, featuring 0.30-style menus and 0.30-style blocks (same block behavior and textures). This is 0.30 updated for modern operating systems (and without relying on ancient versions of Java) and comes with a brand new level format and significantly improved performance.
But the fun begins when you venture into the SMP (multiplayer) mode. While some servers remain just 0.30 nostalga servers, many utilize the latest Classic+Hax and Enhanced gamemodes, where many small and large quality-of-life enhancements have been made available to us, like flight, noclip, custom blocks and more.
