Minecraft Player Spends two Years Creating A Virtual City

Minecraft player spends two years building virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A Delaware student spent two years creating an imaginary world was called Titan City in Minecraft.

Titan City is constructed out of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and includes 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells says it has taken him two years to build his project, working an average of five hours per week working on the project.

His first structure was a virtual replica the World Trade Center. It took 18 months to complete.

The 19-year-old, however, says Titan City is not a realistic model of New York.

"It's inspired by New York," he told the BBC.

"Many people believe it's a recreational activity, but it's not."

The city was originally built with the Xbox 360 version, but the game has since been transferred to the PC version that he claims has more construction options.

Mr Parcells plans to build an airport and an athletic stadium.

He said, "I suppose it's an outlet to architecture and energy."

"I've always liked architecture. I am particularly satisfied with Victorian-style buildings which are more traditional and less art deco.

"A lot of people walk by and want to stroll around and explore, or assist with the building. Many of them assist with the construction of roads."

While Titan City has been welcomed with open arms Mr Parcells stated that he has kept his virtual world a distance from his real life.

He added, "I've kept this under the radar for a while. It's sort of like a second existence I don't speak about however, people are beginning to learn about it."

"My parents think it's cool . I'm sure they're happy I don't do it too often."

Microsoft recently agreed to purchase Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal worth $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game reached its 100 millionth player in February 2014, the game's creator Markus Persson, aka Notch announced on Twitter.

After making an initial purchase, Minecraft is free to download and play. However, in-game purchases are available.

The game is set in a virtual universe composed of cubes of various materials. Nearly all of them can be used as building blocks, and a few of them can be refined into usable raw materials (wood, iron, diamond etc).

The game demands players to survive using blocks to build shelters and turn raw materials and their combinations into items (swords and bows, armor and bows, etc.) to beat the various monsters in the game.
