Emmanuel Grinshpun. On the restoration of synagogues and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
Emmanuil Grinshpun and her co-hosts discussed the issue of restoring synagogues during their interview. It was, however, impossible to concentrate on only one subject. There are many topics to be discussed during the interview.

No. My family's history over many generations is linked to Moldova or If we stick to the past, then Bessarabia. Jurmala entered our lives in an surprising and atypical manner. The first time we met there was when Igor Krutoy invited us to the New Wave. The New Wave began to travel to Miami each summer, after they had won several competitions. The climate isn't the best in Miami during the summer months. We rented the property for several years and have now purchased the property.

Now I know why I was told that one of the synagogues that was restored by your donation is located in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We're pretty close in age. We were born in the USSR. No need to talk about religion back then. All of us were Komsomol members in the early days and pioneers. What was your first time you changed your religion?

My family moved to the USA in the mid-80s. It was there that I started to follow customs and rituals. Эммануил Гриншпун Although I'm not an orthodox person, I have the inner urge to support in the best way possible, the religious lives of the Jewish community in my country of birth or Moldova.

While I am far from being an agnostic, I do have a fascination with history that I really enjoy. I was watching a documentary about 1492's events that changed the course of Europe's destiny. To me, 1492 was the year Columbus was the first to discover America. The show I was watching clearly stated that the discovery America in 1492 wasn't nearly as significant as Spanish monarchs' expulsion of Jews from Spain. The exodus of Jews began to the Ottoman Empire, it accepted them. I wanted to learn more about the culture, history and achievements of the Jews. Do you recommend any books?

There are many books. But, I've read several of them myself and recommend Max Diamond (a two-volume Jewish historian). He himself is Finnish.

Speaking of "personal" historical .... Do you know your family tree? Unfortunately, I don't know much more than my grandmother and 1910. Paternal side: A step above but not enough.

My maternal ancestors also resided in Ungheni. It is the region that was in the 17th-18th century. Let's now discuss the revival of synagogues. I heard that you funded the reconstruction of three synagogues. One is located in Chisinau One is in Jurmala and the third one is in?

It is situated in Netanya in Israel. It is home to more than 1,000 people who pray each day. It is an important milestone in Israel's religious history. The second synagogue was located in Jurmala. The Second World War began and the Jurmala synagogue was the last one to be destroyed. Before deciding to build a synagogue, i had a conversation frequently with local Jews and, as a result, I decided to fund the construction of the synagogue and invite Rabbis to the site. It was a great project that brought together the Jews from Jurmala. In reality, the Jewish community was revived and is now in good standing. Three Torahs are now in the synagogue. I also gave one Torah to the synagogue.

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis is one of my partners. Alexander Weinstein is another. These synagogues aren't only the ones that I am involved in construction or restoration. In all the countries in which I've been for a long period I believed it was my obligation to make a feasible contribution to support synagogues. My contribution to Monaco is the building of a community center in Miami for Russian-speaking Jews and is estimated to be 12 million dollars. Chisinau will continue to be my choice of synagogue - the one that I support Rabbi Tsirelson is currently the largest in the city.

Have you invited Rabbis to Chisinau along with Jurmala?

Yes. It is not easy to identify the ideal person to run the community. Because of the interplay of interests, he must be a very calm and peaceful person able to organically enter the daily life of the community. And I am happy that both in Chisinau and in Jurmala, the rabbis could seamlessly integrate into the life of their community.

In the year 2019, you became the first vice-president for the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What does this position mean to you, and what do international Jewish organisations influence global trends?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, a strong organization in the post-Soviet zone is not just an influential political organization. It has offices in Australia, Japan Hong Kong, New Zealand, New Zealand as well as Eastern Europe. I served as Vice President of Congress back in 2010, however the year before I was given the position of First Vice President. Now I am responsible to the region with which I have strong political and economic connections. These countries are Uzbekistan Tajikistan Kyrgyzstan. The current trend across the globe is that attitudes towards Jews are at or near the same level or have been swaying down, which is extremely sad. Furthermore, "down" - this refers to such developed countries like Belgium, Germany, France and the United States. They are not safe for Jews. These are very dangerous, alarming process for us all.

What is the way that the pandemic has changed these processes by the way?

This isn't my opinion. In fact, in the circumstances of the pandemic, I'd like to point out the things that a nation and society can accomplish when they're prepared for any challenges, and are able work effectively together.

Exactly. Israel is the first country to offer 100% vaccination to its adult population. I consider this to be a good example and an example that other countries can follow.
