There will be an Appeals Process

The new system lets players communicate chat messages in multiplayer games, but the community is concerned about the ramifications.

Mojang's community manager said that the company would not alter its controversial player reporting system and demanded that the harassment stop of Mojang employees.

Posting on Reddit MojangMeesh made clear that while the company appreciates feedback from its players, it doesn't necessarily "change the design principles Mojang Studios adheres to-this includes the upcoming reporting system". They also asked players who are upset to cease "following Mojang employees around here on Reddit" to harass them in unrelated threads. At the time of writing, the post had received almost 2000 downvotes.

Minecraft players have been arguing about the new player reporting system since it was announced just a month ago, but it was finally implemented in yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on both private and Mojang-hosted multiplayer servers to report inappropriate chat messages in chat for review by Mojang investigators, which could result in suspensions and bans for those who do not adhere to Minecraft's guidelines for community members, even on servers hosted by self-hosted players. Many gamers are concerned that this system could lead to bans on players for messages that are taken out of context and more generally, it gives Microsoft too many power to dictate the content on its platform.

Although some players might be acting in a negative manner about it, I don't think their argument is without merit. It's hard to imagine a world in which this system doesn't disqualify someone for engaging in a joke with friends. There will be an appeals process, though it's also true that there are a lot of misconceptions floating around regarding how the system works. You'll find people complaining about their chat being monitored by Microsoft' or fearing they'll be banned from the chat for cursing in any thread. None of these are possible according Mojang's FAQ on the reporting system.

Mojang is in a a jam with this one. A thread from Stuart Duncan, who manages a Minecraft server for children with autism-demonstrates just how much vile stuff Minecraft hosts on a regular basis. Duncan highlights studies and reports from the ADL, the BBC and others that tell stories of predators and racists who play Minecraft in a way that is abominable. Providing tools to combat that behavior is important. While it's true that "think of the children" scare stories are used to justify repressive policies in real life, a tool that lets users report dodgy chat messages in Minecraft isn't exactly the thin end of a severe wedge.

If you are saying "no one ever asked" for this, "the entire community hates this" or "no-one needs this", please stop trying to be an advocate for everyone. "If you are concerned about the exploitation of others, that's excellent. You're not alone. I'm sure it's not perfect. But real people can be saved by this.Always be aware of that.July 27 2022

In other Minecraft news, Mojang recently declared that the game wouldn't be featuring NFTs because they don't align with the "values of inclusion in the creative process". The move at least received enthusiastic support from the playerbase but there's no confirmation yet as to what the AI they've trained to play Minecraft thinks about it.

One of Josh's earliest memories is of playing Quake 2 on the family computer when he was far too young for this and he's been utterly game-brained ever since. Since the time his writing has been featured in Vice, Fanbyte, and the Financial Times. He'll play pretty much anything and has written too much about everything from visual novels to Assassin's creed. His biggest passions are CRPGs and immersive games. He thinks you're all far too naive about Deus Ex: Invisible War.
