Lush Caves was the first cave biome which Axolotls were supposed to reproduce in. These new biomes won't be available in Minecraft until later in the year. So where are we able to find these fish that are fun to watch, and when will they appear?



Axolotls are able to spawn in any underground source of water, as long as they are in complete darkness and below sea level (y63). This guide will be updated in the latest update 1.18 biomes to reflect any changes that may occur in spawning. But it is how you can still find axolotls.

Axolotls can't be controlled legally however they're not hostile towards humans and can be scooped up into a bucket without difficulty. You can then bring them along with you, or put them back in the pond or lake close to your base.



You can also connect the lead to an axolotl if you don't have a bucket on hand however it will go out of commission if it's out of water for more than five minutes, though not if it's raining or there's a thunderstorm.

How do you breed axolotls in Minecraft



Axolotls can be bred with buckets of tropical fish. Once you have two adult axolotls together feed them each with the tropical fish. You will see red hearts signalling that they've entered a love-mode. What a lovely way to celebrate love.



The baby axolotl will inherit the colour of one of its parents at random and will take 20 game minutes to reach maturity. You can speed up this process by using more tropical fish.

- Lucy (pink) and Wild (brown).

Blue


The blue axolotl is the rarest colour and has a 0.083% chance of spawning naturally or via the breeding of adults with different colours. If you have your eyes set on a blue axolotl you will require more patience and luck than usual.



What do they consume?

Axolotls consume tropical fish, which are generally found in ocean biomes. If you're looking to feed an axolotl, you'll need to use a bucket of tropical fish rather than single ones you've previously caught.



Tropical fish are very fearful and can be difficult to capture in buckets. This is why patience is essential. In any case, it's worth checking to check if the Wandering Trader has a bucket of tropical fish available for sale.



Combat



Do axolotls attack other mobs?



While these adorable creatures don't have a problem with players, they'll not hesitate to take on sea-based threats. They will leave turtles and dolphins to their own devices, but they'll take on any other threat.



They also have a neat defence mechanism: If an Axolotl suffers damage while submerged, it will go dead and then gain Regeneration. The Regeneration status effect may be transferred to a player for a short period when killing a mob the that the axolotl is fighting.
