Young Leaders Day Encourages Students to Dream

Live a 3-D experience. That's the challenge that inspirational New Zealand leaders put to the full house of more than 2000 primary and intermediate students from 147 schools at the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) - held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau earlier today.

Students were taught by Silver Fern and Northern Mystics player Laura Langman, athlete and Carabiner Mentoring Programme founder Cam Calkoen Adventurer and presenter of TV One's First Crossings series Jamie Fitzgerald the chief executive of The Mind Lab Frances Valintine, and Attitude Programmes for Schools presenter Charlie Laumatia.

NYLD events encourage students to live a 3-D life by imagining, daring and enhancing their leadership skills.

"Just as a 3D movie bursts off the screen it is the same with the experience of a 3D life is superior to a boring flat one," NYLD manager Annette Fale declares.

"Imagine what your life could look like. Follow that dream. Be brave and do the brave things that make life an adventure. Your strengths are your most valuable assets. There's so much more to you than you know. Students were taught that vision, hard work and grit are the keys to a prosperous life.

Frances Valintine was the driving driver behind Media Design School. In 2013, she launched The Mind Lab in Newmarket A facility dedicated to teaching electronics, robotics programming, filmmaking animation, science technology and animation to children aged 4 to 15 years old.

Frances demanded that the next generation of leaders to be ready for a changing future.

"To prepare for the future, you need to open your mind - curiosity is your strongest asset, not technology, not how well you play Minecraft but curiosity and discovery," Frances said, as the students wrote notes in their notebooks.

"Wake up every morning and think about ways that I can improve things.

The day was both inspirational and enjoyable. Highlights of the day included performances by The Laughing Samoans, interactive gaming and 3D video clips.

Over 90,000 students from New Zealand have attended a National Young Leaders Day since 2001. Every year, events are held in Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North, Rotorua. Game servers Christchurch and Dunedin.
