Avril Lavigne and Mon Sun go Punk on the Red Carpet at the VMA Awards.

Standing out: Lavigne wore a long-sleeve black t-shirt that was tucked into a wide-legged pair of pants.



Derek Ryan Smith, the songwriter, added a touch of darkness to his outfit by wearing black leather shoes.



The singer rounded out his look with white underwear and a variety of jewelry.



Lavigne was nominated for the Best Alternative Video award for her work on the visuals for her track Love It When You Hate Me.



The track, which served as the second single from her most recent album Love Sux, featured rapper Blackbear.
