Valheim launched on Steam exactly five weeks ago, and it's been on fire since then. Iron Gate's Viking survival game rocketed to the top of the charts with 5 million copies sold in just a month Early Access. It also surpasses Dota 2 in terms concurrent active players.
Valheim Steam reviews exude awe, relief and wonder. Mcname People often compare the experience to the first time they played Minecraft admiring the game's vastness, depth and atmosphere and pondering the way a team of five developers could pack an immersive experience of this quality into a download of just 1GB. Valheim sets players loose in an original realm of Viking purgatory, a vast, procedurally generated, world filled with mythical Norse beasts, high seas, hunting, and crafting. It's dense and accommodating, action-packed but peaceful.
To date, Iron Gate has sold more than 5.7 million copies of Valheim. There are just five members of the development team. "We're doing our best," Iron Gate co-founder Henrik Tornqvist told Engadget. "It has been pretty hectic around here since launch."
Tornqvist, Richard Svensson, the studio founder, are planning to recruit a few more individuals to assist with the influx of bug reports coming from the thousands of beta testers. Otherwise, it's getting support from Coffee Stain Publishing - the team behind Goat Simulator, a veritable grandpa of viral video games.
Svensson began working on Valheim in 2017, as a side hustle. He and Tornqvist were co-workers at Swedish studio Pieces Interactive. But, Svensson left the company in order to concentrate on Valheim in 2018.
