Well hello there Intrepid Massively readers! This week instead of my usual selection of complaints crammed into the confines of a single column I've decided to try something different. On Monday, I launched a thread of questions and answers regarding any MMO-related topic on the Massively Facebook fanpage, Massively Twitter, as well as my personal Twitter. You guys didn't disappoint, and you certainly sent me a lot of interesting e-mails.
So, for the past three days, I've been preparing responses to the questions that came through my inbox. What did intrepid readers ask me to answer? Which e-mails did you choose from the plethora of text? What is the speed of air of an African Swallow? These and a host of other questions (except the one that swallows has been done to death, go Google it or something) shall be answered following the break! Thundercats, hoooooooooo! Thundercats hooooooooo!

McStudent, this question is an Anti-Aliased question! Anti-Aliased is available to all questions! Except if it's about baked beans. It's not a question for Anti-Aliased. This is more of a question to the dog that talks in those commercials.
So, to answer your question, yes, there are definitely a few MMOs that throw the leveling system completely out of the window, even beyond EVE Online. Let me suggest some.
"Would you be irritated if in new MMOs they only let you play as a guy if you were a man?"
Darkfall could be appealing to you if you are an avid PvP player (which you might be, since you included EVE in your question), Darkfall is focused on PvP, but it's also all about skills instead of overall levels. Your ability to master a specific thing, like mining or swinging your sword will improve as you progress in the game.
Ultima Online is the best alternative if you're looking to play something more traditional. The game continues to run well (they have an expansion due out, Stygian Abyss) and it still holds to the idea of using skills over levels.
If you want to be cheap about it, check out PlaneShift or RuneScape. RuneScape is a popular hang-out for all, particularly those who can't handle games with a lot of graphics and has a very active community. PlaneShift is smaller than RuneScape, enforces everyone to play roleplay but isn't fully-featured as of this writing. But hey, something is better than nothing, isn't it?
Asheron's Call and Fallen Earth are two games that place an emphasis on skills, but still employ a pseudo-leveling mechanism. Fallen Earth is newer and puts a lot of emphasis on the skills of the game rather than the actual level, giving you a wide range of options to customize your character. Asheron's Call has one of the most innovative systems I've experienced in MMOs -- a general/specialized system. When you engage in combat, you gain general experience which is counted towards a "level." However, the experience is assigned by you to your particular skills. While the game is played with levels Your experience is continuously used to improve your abilities.
It's just a small taste of the games that are based on skills. You have Mortal Online and Earthrise to look for in the near future.
Next question! Next question!
Hi Sera, I played an older MMO called Ragnarok Online which would only allow players to play as the gender you claimed you were when creating your account on the web site. If you were a male player you could only create male characters in-game. You think that this is something that should be encouraged to get rid of off G.I.R.L. "'s (Guys In Real Life?) Do you believe it's an older way of thinking about the world and is very outdated? Would you be annoyed that new MMOs would only allow you to play as a man if you were a man?
Ahhhh Ragnarok... where I had to create two accounts just so I could have my regular female avatar... good times.
Matt you have a great question. I find it to boring to ridicule your name, so I think I'll be honest and say, "Does it really matter?"
Online guys are frightened of female avatars. It's just a bunch of pixels on a screen that has nothing to do with anything. Unless, of course, you're looking for true love in an MMO. My advice: Do not try to find the true love of your life in an MMO. If you find love, you find love. If you go looking for it, you'll see guys dressed in dresses.
