Minecraft Owner Bans In-game NFTs in Order to stop Profiteering

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a strong stance against NFTs. The studio, which is owned Microsoft, stated that the integration of NFTs into Minecraft are not something they would allow or even support.

"To ensure that Minecraft players have a secure and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be used inside our client and server applications, nor can Minecraft in-game content , such as worlds, skins, personal items, or other mods, be used by blockchain technology to create a precious digital asset," Mojang said.

According to Mojang, some companies have developed "NFT implementations that work with Minecraft world files and skin packs." The studio also suggests that there could theoretically be Minecraft "collectible" NFTs or that players could earn NFTs by performing tasks in Minecraft on a server or earning them outside of the game.

Mojang claims that these practices encourage digital exclusion and scarcity, which is against Minecraft's core values. Mojang has stated that NFTs "are not inclusive of all our communities and create a situation in which the haves and the not-so-haves." Mojang goes further by saying that the speculative nature of NFTs "encourages profiteering."

The blog article is worth reading in all its entirety. It provides a variety of critiques of NFTs and blockchain-related projects in a clear and understandable way. (There are many more quotes that I could have included.)

Valve has also taken a an aggressive stance against blockchain games and NFTs on Steam and the majority of the gaming community has soundly disapproved of NFTs, with Ubisoft discontinuing the production of NFTs for Ghost Recon Breakpoint just a few months after launching the initiative. Epic Games stated last year that it was "open" to blockchain-based games to be made available on the Epic Games Store. What about The store received the first blockchain-based game in June.

Mojang does not completely exclude the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology in the near future. However, it states that "we are not planning to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft right at this time."
