The original 1993 Doom that was the basis for more than three decades of shooters is still very much alive and well. While the game has seen translated to almost every platform, it's not just a joke. Mods for the community, such as Brutal Doom, that have access to the source code for the classic game, have made the original game's popularity after it was outclassed by modern games. The latest addition to the popular shooter is the latest ray-tracing lighting effects.
This isn't the only time we've seen a combination of high-tech lighting over low-tech visuals. The famously blocky Minecraft comes with official Nvidia-branded RTX support, and Nvidia revamped Quake II to show what full-blown path tracing could look like. However, the Doom mod is available for free to everyone PC player. It's especially dramatic in Doom's sci fi setting, a Martian colony that is infested with ravenous monsters. Realistically rendered shadows and reflections from plasma ammunition, fireballs, and pools of lava show off precisely how much lighting can be done with good lighting even in Doom's basic polygon environments and sprite enemy.

The PrBoom mod comes from the programmer Sultim Tsyrendashiev. Just Another Mini Blog He's baked in support for Nvidia DLSS as well as other popular tweaks, like an always-available in-game flashlight. You'll still need a fairly robust PC to run the mod at its best even though DLSS can help ease the load. You can still play the first three episodes of Doom. However you may need to go into the settings file to ensure optimal performance. Mod files and source code are available for download on Github right now.
