Monthly subscription boxes are a unique concept. Subscribers pay a fee to receive t-shirts and other merchandise. Companies such as Loot Crate, Fancy, Graze and Dollar Shave Club all utilise the model however, there's a brand new player to the market: Mojang. This is right, Minecraft now has its own swag box.
For just $30 per month, Mojang says it will send subscribers a unique "Mine Chest" full of "hand-picked official, Minecraft items." Although the exact contents aren't known Mojang claims that customers can expect a t-shirt, crafting recipes, and other collectibles each month.
The Mine Chest was first unveiled in July 2015 at MineCon. Mojang gave away the keys to 5,000 beta testers to assist them in securing their first boxes. Now it's open to everyone. While it may sound like the perfect present for anyone who's a Minecraft player, it does come with a few stipulations.
Mojang first requires that customers select a monthly plan. The plan is charged in advance and shipments won't begin until May. Mojang claims that upfront payment allows it to better service customers by buying premium items in greater quantities, which will lower costs. Then, a $7 shipping cost will also be added to each monthly Mine Chest. Additionally, Mine Chests are currently only available in the US. NEWSFORDUMMIES Mojang blames the high cost of shipping for its exclusivity, but claims it is "working very hard" in order to reduce them.
