iLands is a game for iPhone and iPad. It's free for iOS 4.3 and up. Yourbestbet However, iLands Premium is available as an in-app purchase (US $3.99.) If you're not looking to pay $6.99 for Minecraft - Pocket Edition, then this is the game for you. You start with a fresh block world to build on and personalize however you like.
The graphics are decent in comparison to Minecraft - Pocket Edition, but they could be better. The D-pad is located on the left side of the screen that allows strafing, moving forwards and backwards. Sometimes, the D-pad can be a bit difficult to use. The sensitivity requires a bit of getting used to at first, but it's bearable for the most part. The control on the right side is solely for jumping up, and it worked pretty well. While navigating the terrain, the experience was a bit jerky when you were hopping over obstacles in your path. Sometimes, the touch targets would not respond until I touched them several times. It would take more than two taps to break up dirt or grass or blocks using the X button. While I was creating and exploring my Solo world it crashed frequently.
You're given an assortment of building materials that include sand, grass, bricks. The steel skeleton cubes are unique to iLands as I've never seen anything similar to them in Minecraft - Pocket Edition. Steel skeleton blocks are great because they let you construct a solid structure while still having light, unlike building using solid blocks. I really enjoyed using cobblestone to construct houses and roads. The materials that have locks can be removed by purchasing the full version. This review was done with the free version.
If you're looking for a survival mode similar to Minecraft - Pocket Edition, you will not find it in the free version of iLands. I'm not sure if something similar to survival is available in the full paid version. I tend to play in creative mode every day in Minecraft - Pocket Edition anyway, so I didn't mind that in iLands.
Overall, iLands is worth the free download if love building with blocks in a virtual world like I do. I'd like to learn what the paid version allows you to do, other than unlock building materials. I was a fan of building buildings and any other projects my imagination could come up with.
ILands is a good alternative for Sandbox games.
